Spearfish to the Canadian Border

Snow on the Ground the Evening we Arrived in Spearfish, SD
Spearfish, Montana had been our destination for the evening before, which is not far from Sundance. We actually reserved a hotel that we had stayed at previously. It was rather cold in this area, as you can see from the pictures there is plenty of snow. High snow banks decorated the streets. When we checked into our Hotel the owner told me that just a ways from there the area received three feet of the white stuff in one sitting....ugh!

Snow in Front of our Hotel Room
Next morning we saw the beginnings of lilac blooms stopped by the snow and cold. We drove one not really knowing if we were in for winter or summer at my Sister’s.

Driving through some of the lesser populated states is not your typical drive. Usually you can stop at rest areas or service stations without much concern for planning, however, areas where there are few towns there are fewer services. It was getting towards lunch time and believe me even McDonald’s would have looked good....but nothing. We were near the town of Redig, South Dakota and we came across M&R Traveler's Rest. It was small, really in the middle of the prairies and it was cold getting out to enter the premises. Great little haven! It was decorated with tin ceilings, wooden counters, a couple of wooden tables filled with people who know each other and shelves of local memorabilia. It was a family run business - mom, dad, daughter and hubby, plus new born baby. You could see the mom cutting up the potatoes we were having. She came out of the kitchen several times to be sure our order was satisfactory - grilled cheese sandwiches with deep fried potatoes. An overall great, friendly little place.

The snow had melted and it was much warmer as we went north. I know that seems unexpected. We arrived at the border of Saskatchewan, Canada just before supper. We were intensely questioned at the border, as usual. Perhaps the border station we entered at is not busy so the questioning of the few gives them something to do for a brief time.

My Sister, Charlene, and Brother-in-law, Mike live about four point eight kilometers from the border. It was so great to see them. We had the added bonus of two little nieces staying at their place for the weekend.
